1. Acceptance of Terms
By installing the ClipRoots browser extension or using the ClipRoots website (together, the "Service"), you agree to these Terms of Service. If you don't agree to them, don't use the Service.
We may update these terms from time to time. Continuing to use the Service after an update means you accept the revised terms.
2. The Service
ClipRoots lets you save passages of text or timestamped moments of video from pages you visit, add your own notes alongside them, and optionally publish them to a public feed where other users can view and comment.
We may add, change, or remove features at any time. We'll try not to break things you depend on without warning, but we can't promise the Service will always look or work exactly the way it does today.
3. Your Account
Browsing the extension and reading public clips doesn't require an account. Commenting on a clip does — we use passwordless, email-based sign-in (a magic link sent to your inbox) rather than a traditional password.
You're responsible for keeping access to your email address secure, since that's what controls your ClipRoots identity. Let us know if you believe your account has been accessed without your permission.
You must be at least 13 years old to use the Service. If you are under the age of majority where you live, you may only use the Service with the involvement of a parent or guardian.
4. Your Content
You retain ownership of the notes, commentary, and clips you create. By publishing a clip or comment to the public feed, you grant ClipRoots a non-exclusive, worldwide license to host, display, and distribute that content as part of operating the Service.
You're responsible for making sure you have the right to quote or clip the material you save — see Rights Claims below for what happens when that's disputed.
5. Acceptable Use
When using ClipRoots, you agree not to:
- Publish clips or comments that are unlawful, harassing, or knowingly false.
- Use the Service to infringe someone else's intellectual property rights.
- Attempt to access another user's account or data without authorization.
- Interfere with or disrupt the Service, including through automated scraping at a volume that degrades it for other users.
- Use the Service for any purpose that violates applicable law.
We may remove content or suspend access for accounts that violate these terms.
6. Rights Claims
If you believe a clip infringes your copyright or violates these terms in some other way, use the "Report a complaint / issue" button on the clip's page, or follow the process in our DMCA policy.
Filing a report immediately hides the affected clip from the public feed and its direct link, pending review — this is automatic and happens the moment the report is filed. The report is never posted publicly; it's only visible to the ClipRoots team, who reviews it by hand. If an author's clips have accumulated three or more reports in total, all of their clips are automatically hidden pending review. Contact us if you believe a clip was hidden in error, and we'll review it by hand.
7. Termination
You can stop using the Service at any time by removing the extension and, if you'd like, asking us to delete your account data.
We may suspend or terminate access for accounts that repeatedly violate these terms, including the repeat-infringer policy described in our DMCA policy.
8. Disclaimers
The Service is provided "as is," without warranties of any kind, express or implied. We don't guarantee that ClipRoots will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that clips will be preserved indefinitely.
Content published by other users — including clips, commentary, and comments — reflects the views of the person who posted it, not ClipRoots's.
9. Limitation of Liability
To the extent permitted by law, ClipRoots is not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the Service, including loss of data or content.
10. Changes to These Terms
We'll post updates to this page when these terms change. Material changes will be reflected in the "Last updated" date above.
11. Governing Law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, without regard to conflict-of-law principles, and without limiting any mandatory consumer-protection rights you may have under the laws of your own country or state of residence. Any dispute arising from these Terms or the Service is subject to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of that province, unless applicable law requires otherwise.
