1. Overview
ClipRoots ("we," "us," "our") respects the intellectual property rights of others and expects users of the ClipRoots browser extension and feed (the "Service") to do the same. We respond to notices of alleged copyright infringement that comply with the U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act ("DMCA") and other applicable laws.
2. Reporting Claimed Infringement
If you believe that content published through ClipRoots (a "clip") infringes your copyright, you can report it two ways:
- In-app: use the "Report a complaint / issue" option on the clip in question, or
- By email/mail: send a written notice to our Designated Agent, below.
To be effective, a notice must be a written communication that includes substantially the following (17 U.S.C. § 512(c)(3)):
- A physical or electronic signature of a person authorized to act on behalf of the copyright owner.
- Identification of the copyrighted work claimed to have been infringed.
- Identification of the material you claim is infringing, and information reasonably sufficient to let us locate it (e.g. the clip's URL or the source page it was quoted from).
- Your contact information: address, telephone number, and email address.
- A statement that you have a good-faith belief that the disputed use is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law.
- A statement, made under penalty of perjury, that the above information is accurate and that you are the copyright owner or authorized to act on the owner's behalf.
3. Designated Agent
Notices of claimed infringement should be sent to:
Email: cliproots@gmail.com
Mailing address: 38 Lodge Road, Conception Bay South, Newfoundland, Canada
(This agent must also be registered with the U.S. Copyright Office's Designated Agent Directory at https://dmca.copyright.gov before this policy provides safe-harbor protection under 17 U.S.C. § 512.)
4. Our Process
Filing a report through either channel above immediately hides the identified clip from the public feed and from its direct link, pending our review — this happens automatically, the moment the report is filed, not after a manual review step.
The report itself (your notice, and who filed it) is only ever visible to the ClipRoots team — it is never posted publicly, and the clip's author isn't automatically notified of the specific report. We review each report by hand and follow up with the reporter and, where appropriate, the clip's author.
5. Counter-Notification
If you believe your clip was removed in error or as a result of misidentification, you may submit a counter-notice to our Designated Agent containing (17 U.S.C. § 512(g)(3)):
- Your physical or electronic signature.
- Identification of the material removed and its location before removal.
- A statement under penalty of perjury that you have a good-faith belief the material was removed as a result of mistake or misidentification.
- Your name, address, and telephone number, and a statement that you consent to the jurisdiction of the Federal District Court for your district (or, if outside the U.S., any district in which we may be found), and that you will accept service of process from the person who filed the original notice.
If we receive a valid counter-notice, we may reinstate the content in 10-14 business days unless the original claimant informs us they have filed a court action.
6. Repeat Infringer Policy
ClipRoots will, in appropriate circumstances, disable or terminate the accounts of users who are determined to be repeat infringers. A user who is the subject of three or more claims filed against their clips is subject to automatic review, and their published clips may be removed pending that review — see our Terms of Service for how this works in practice.
7. Misrepresentations
Under 17 U.S.C. § 512(f), any person who knowingly materially misrepresents that material is infringing, or that it was removed by mistake, may be liable for damages.
8. Contact
